Senate Bill Seeks to Strengthen U.S. Tech Standards

Legislators want NIST to counter China’s influence on new technology standards.

Senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee introduced the Promoting United States Leadership in Standards Act of 2024, which seeks to increase U.S. participation in international standards-setting bodies for emerging technologies. The bill includes a pilot program to fund standard-setting meetings by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“In recent years, the Communist Party of China has asserted their dominance in the global technology space, and as their status has risen, our authority and influence has fallen,” Senator Warner stated. “This legislation clearly outlines steps we must take to reestablish our leadership and ensure that we are doing all we can to set the global standards for critical and emerging technologies.”

The legislation also calls for NIST to create a web portal to facilitate stakeholder engagement in international standardization efforts.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senators Warner and Blackburn as they seek to ensure U.S. involvement in the standards for emerging technologies.
  • For members of the Senate as they consider the legislation for the pilot program involving the NIST.
